In 1952 Addai Alkhas and his brother, John Alkhas, established the Khonein printing press in Tehran. Along with Nimrod Simono and others, they published Gilgamesh, an Assyrian monthly literary magazine, which first appeared in April 1952. Gilgamesh provided a vehicle for Assyrian writers in Iran and other countries to publish their poems, stories, historical articles and other writings in their own language. In addition, Gilgamesh reported on important news in the Assyrian communities in Iran and around the world, such as the re-establishment of Assyrian language schools and publishing in Iran, and served as a beacon of encouragement and support for the great flowering of Assyrian literary efforts that it helped to inaugurate. Gilgamesh ceased publication in December 1961 with issue number 70. Volume II of this reprint includes issues 18 through 34 (1953-1955).
