By Yonan H. Shahbaz

The Rage of Islam: an Account of the Massacre of Christians by the Turks in Persia provides a first hand account of the massacre of Assyrians in Iran by the Turks and Kurds in 1915 following the entry of Turkey into World War I as an ally of Germany. Yonan H. Shabaz was an Assyrian from Iran who, like many other Assyrians of the time, traveled to the West seeking an advanced education. He became a Baptist in 1892 and, after completing his education and taking American citizenship, returned to Iran as a missionary along with his American wife. His account is noteworthy because it draws attention to the role Germany played in encouraging the Turks to attack the Assyrians and Armenians in their own Empire and in Persia as means to preempt the possibility of their alliance with Russia.
